RELEASING captive-bred threatened regent honeyeaters into Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park is a wonderful project. Birds Australia, Taronga Zoo, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and La Trobe University should be congratulated (The Age, 11/5).
I hope they have informed Peter Garrett of their efforts as he considers the application from Holcim Australia to dig a massive quarry just outside the park boundary fence. Construction of this quarry will destroy a considerable number of mature mugga ironbark and whitebox trees that have, in previous years, supplied nectar for these birds.
Argh, they're doing what now??? :(
